scratch built table lamp series.
The brief I set myself was to construct an alien abduction lamp from everyday household objects — an egg cup, a disposable champagne glass, an LED reading lamp, a transparent globe Christmas decoration, and a set of coloured felt drinks coasters — assisted, of course, by a few strategically chosen toys.
In mass-produced versions of this novelty lamp, I’d always been frustrated by one detail: the abductee, usually a plastic cow or human figure, is invariably fixed to the base, frozen mid-abduction
This static arrangement undermines the illusion of levitation — the very essence of the scene. I wanted to design a version in which the figure would be suspended by the same element creating the beam itself, so that the entire composition appeared more convincing, more alive, as though the abduction were actually taking place before your eyes.
